At A Civil Disagreement, we believe there’s something missing - a place where regular Americans can go to contribute well-thought-out opinions on politics and today's social issues. Our mission is to provide a respectful and thoughtful forum for different voices - liberal, conservative and alternative views - on a new political question each month. We hope you enjoy politics from this vantage point. We hope that this is a testament to the idea that WE THE PEOPLE have something of value to add, and that political thought is not the monopoly of politicians and professional political operatives.

With Joe Wilson talking about 'a civil disagreement' it sort of taints what this site is trying to do!

In September, Representative Joe Wilson (Republican from South Carolina) shouted "You Lie!" during President Barack Obama’s speech to a joint session of Congress on health care. This referred to the President’s comments that health care reform will not apply to those in the United States illegally (illegal immigrants). This outburst was rude to the speaker, disrespectful to the President of the United States and was quickly condemned by members of both political parties. Representative Wilson later apologized to the President for the outburst but refused to apologize to the House of Representatives, stating publicly that "one apology is sufficient." This resulted in the House approving a resolution of disapproval against Wilson, mostly along party lines.

Following this incident, both Wilson and Rob Miller, Wilson’s likely opponent in the 2010 election, received significant campaign donations. Although this shows that many Americans either approve of Wilson’s outburst or his actions and attitude following this incident, it also shows that many Americans disapprove of Wilson’s lack of civility. This blog, along with its related site, A Civil Disagreement, are for those Americans that want a place where political discussion can be both respectful and civil. These sites are needed more than ever!
